Three decisions come before anything else

A picture book has a short decision chain, but three choices lock in everything downstream: trim size, total page count, and binding method. Once those are fixed, paper and finishing can be adjusted on the same artwork. Reverse the order and you usually redo the layout.

The sequence that works: set the trim size from the child's age range, paginate the story and round the page count to a multiple of 4, choose the binding from the intended use (home reading, gift, or school distribution), and only then tune paper and cover finishing. Swapping paper or adding foil is a same-file change; changing trim size is a full re-layout.

Why 32 pages, and why square picture books dominate

32 pages is not arbitrary — it is what the press sheet produces. One large sheet folds into 8 panels, prints both sides, and trims into exactly 32 pages with almost no waste, which is why 32 pages is the cheapest standard picture book format. It is also why children's book page counts are almost always a multiple of 4: one folded sheet always yields 4 pages.

Binding decides how long the book survives

Binding is where a picture book is won or lost. Children handle books far more roughly than adults, and whether a spine holds is decided at the ordering stage.

Our default advice is to route by purpose. For a 100-copy run you keep at home, saddle stitch or perfect binding is enough. For a gift edition or a library copy, use hardcover — the greyboard cover resists pressure in a way a soft cover cannot. Paper and picture book safety paperwork

Paper choice comes down to two questions: is the spread illustration-driven or text-driven, and does glare matter.

Three interior stocks cover most picture books. 80gsm and 100gsm woodfree are light, non-reflective and pleasant to turn — the right call for text-heavy stories. 128gsm art paper holds saturated colour and fine detail for full-bleed illustration. If a child reads under a desk lamp for long stretches, matte stocks (matte art paper, matte lamination) are easier on the eyes than gloss, because they reflect less light.

On materials, we print on FSC-certified paper with soy-based inks, and our technical content follows the ISO 12647-2 colour management standard and FSC paper specifications. Cover finishing: foil, debossing, spot UV, lamination

Picture book finishing exists to make the book last, not only to look good. The standard post-press options listed on our hardcover product page are perfect binding, foil stamping, debossing, spot UV and cover lamination. In practice:

• Foil stamped title — the most common picture book finish. Author names, school names and a child's name all work; gold, silver and rose gold are available.
• Debossing — a recessed impression with no colour laid on top. Understated, and it does not wear the way foil can under constant handling.
• Spot UV — a gloss image on a matte cover, so the protagonist or the title reads by touch as well as by eye.
• Cover lamination — matte lamination resists fingerprints and feels soft; gloss looks brighter but shows marks. Since children handle covers constantly, matte usually ages better.

A hardcover binding includes printed-format endpapers on the inside of the cover as part of its construction. If you want artwork or a map on them, supply the artwork with the rest of the files. Many picture books also use rounded corners to soften the edges; that is a custom trim, so mention it before we quote and we will confirm feasibility first.

How the price is built: tiers and cost drivers

One rule of thumb: do not spend the whole budget on finishing. Picture books wear out at the spine and the corners, and those are solved by binding and cover material, not by foil. Money spent on the right binding lasts longer than three finishes stacked on one cover.

The normal picture book order pattern is two-stage. The first run validates the content and the feel of the book — a batch for a book fair, a market stall, or parents in your network. The second run, once reaction is confirmed, uses volume pricing.

On a 32-page hardcover, most first editions start at 100 copies to check illustration cropping, spread shift and how a child actually handles the book. If the second edition has steady readers or school orders, it goes straight to 500 copies from the same file on the same stock — the only variable is quantity.
